Myth #1: Build it and they will come
Getting people to your website takes
more than just building and putting in on the Internet.
It is very important that you promote your website as
well. Make sure your business cards, brochures, flyers
and any other material you use in your promotion package
contains information on your website. It is also essential
that you make sure your site is optimized for the search
engines. This will bring more visitors to your site
as they will have an easier time finding you.
Myth #2: Anyone can create a successful
website
Designing a website can be much more
complex than writing HTML and requires many different
skills. These skills include but are not limited to
HTML, graphic design, CGI and database programming.
There are good web design software programs called WYSIWYG
that can help, but in order to fine-tune the design
you need to know HTML and possibly some web and database
programming
Myth #2: Do it yourself and you can
save money
Designing a website can be more costly
than you may think.
Yes, there are software packages you can use to design
your own website, but they do have a learning curve
which will take up your time. If you need a more complex
site, it will be necessary for you to learn Javascript,
web programming and database programming. The learning
curve on that is even higher. How much time are you
willing to take away from what you do best? Some of
the better software packages can be expensive. Why spend
your money and time on doing it yourself when you contract
with a professional design firm that has the skills
and software to design a website that is a true representation
of your business.
